Full Fibre Install

What to expect when you get your FTTP full fibre installed

Many of you are awaiting your installation of FTTP or Full Fibre as Openreach now like to call it. So we thought it would be helpful just to right a short piece on a resident's experience so far and what you are likely to expect on the day of installation.

Openreach attended to complete the installation on our chosen date and time and were most helpful.

In order to get Fibre to our property a fibre optic cable was connected from our nearest telephone pole to the property. The installer we had was kind enough to ask where we would like this put (I did not think he was making a joke.. :-)). We were asked if it should follow the current copper cable. We choose to have it moved to a more direct line to the property rather than diagonal across the garden. We cheekily asked if they could also move the old copper cable to follow this new route which they dutifully did - fabulous!

The new cable installed was an all in one copper and fibre optic cable and it was installed on the pole and came across to the house where it is connected via an eye bolt. It then runs down behind a drain pipe to make it look neater.

You will then be asked where you would like the cable to enter the house, this may be where you have your current phone socket or somewhere else, if like us you may decide to use the opportunity to move it to a new location, within reason.

On the outside of the wall before the cable enters the house there should be a grey box around the size of an A5 notepad installed. But we asked them not to install it because we were concerned about how it would look considering we are in a conservation area. They therefore installed the cable straight into the house without this box.

In order to power the fibre line you will need a small box installed (right) internally, it is a little smaller than a paperback book and will need power so bear that in mind when you decide where to have your cable installed. Additionally this will need to be close to your router (WiFi device) as they need to connect via a cable (Ethernet).

We had ours installed in a small cupboard as we didn't fancy having it on show.

Last but not least the engineer helped us plug in our Router and we connected a laptop to it via Wi-Fi to ensure the connection was up and running and 'voila' super speedy internet.

All in all a very happy customer.
